There has been a lot of talk about conspiracies lately. I have a theory about them.
Many of the people who disparage conspiracy theorists are involved in them. It seems to be a popular way to discredit anyone you disagree with or who is exposing the conspiracy you are involved with.
I would opine that conspiracies have gotten a bad name. They deserve better than the derision they are getting. Lots of good things come about as a result of them. Some bad things as well.
My parents were good people and they often conspired to keep secrets from my brothers and me. They conspired to keep our Christmas presents secret from us. Then they conspired to lie to us about where they came from. Sometimes the size of the conspiracy grew to include other family members. Aunts and uncles joined in. Even though those conspiracies were always uncovered in the end, they had conspired to do lots of things that turned out well. Often those who have been conspired against joined in on the conspiracy. It’s more fun to be an insider than an outsider.
But bad people also conspire to do bad things. Like deceive others into believing lies. Governments conspire a lot. As do people who want to be in government. Our government creates whole agencies to conspire. Agencies like the CIA, the NSA, and the FBI. Outsiders often become insiders in those conspiracies as well.
Often they conspire to do illegal things. Sometimes they conspire to do things that they know will lead to people losing their rights. Even their lives. Those type of conspiracies seem to be quite common.
Recently a school board superintendent in Virginia conspired with others to lie about a rape that had occurred at a high school. Does any thinking person really believe that he didn’t talk to others to craft a response to the event when it was discovered? Maybe someone believes he didn’t. But not me. If he did talk to others about it, it’s a conspiracy in my view.
Here is one definition of the word:
"conspiracy. n. when people work together by agreement to commit an illegal act. A conspiracy may exist when the parties use legal means to accomplish an illegal result, or to use illegal means to achieve something that in itself is lawful."
There may be conspiracies just to spread untruths or keep truth from being known. That is, in and of itself, not always illegal. So everywhere and always there are more conspiracies than open efforts.
That’s my theory about conspiracies. So I plead guilty to being a conspiracy theorist. I feel pretty good about my status. I may even dream up some new theories about stuff that’s happening lately. If you join me in that, you can be an insider instead of an outsider.
Wanna be in on it? Let’s talk about it. Maybe even conspire.
It seems to me anytime a truth is uncovered accidentally that exposes bad or illegal behavior,it is now dismissed as a ‘conspiracy theory’.A perfect example is the so called insurrection on January 6.I could feel from the get go it was staged…everything about it.
